Masterclass  Playwright  Fellows

New World Theatre is currently accepting submissions for its Masterclass Playwright Fellows program. From among the submissions, a select group of eight playwrights will be chosen to participate in a two-month play development program that will conclude with a masterclass led by Stuart Spencer: playwright, teacher, dramaturg, and author of The Playwright’s Guidebook.

In addition, fellow playwrights will receive two evenings of script-in-hand performances of their masterclass play, and a compilation anthology of all the plays will be published by New World Theatre Publishing.

Collaborative Play Development
The goal of this program is to create a collaborative body of works, comprised of eight individual plays, that can be produced as a play cycle.

In May 2018, each of the selected playwright fellows will be given an impulse writing exercise to complete. These will be used to formulate a mutually agreed upon subject or theme that will be the basis of the collaboration.

In June 2018, the fellows will begin a two-month process to collectively shape and write their eight short plays. There will be weekly virtual meetups to share and discuss the works in progress. And all the fellows will be encouraged to engage with each other and explore how best to work as part of a collective group of writers.

Masterclass
One of the true masters of dramatic structure, Stuart Spencer comes to the Granite State for the first time to work with a select group of eight playwrights. During the masterclass, each playwright will have their previously prepared play read by a group of actors, followed by Mr Spencer’s in-depth analysis in a one-on-one session.

Mr Spencer will also give a talk on the craft of playwriting, in which he will break down his own writing process, and describe how he applies the principles of dramatic structure.

Submission Guidelines
One submission per playwright.

Submit a ten-page sample of your best work. It can be a ten-minute play or a ten-page scene/excerpt from a longer work.

Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2018
